Euki App will be open source!

Hey everyone,

Euki’s Co-ED’s Ana and Melinh here to share a bit of news for our users and community.

To get right to the point - we plan to release the Euki App via a GPL v3.0 open source license by the end of this month - July 2024.

If you already know about open source software - you probably understand why this is the next step for the Euki App. If you have never heard of open source  software, read on to learn why and how this will and won’t impact you as a user. Either way, feel free to reach out to us with questions about this decision via our contact page.

An open source Euki App better aligns with our values, goals, and vision for the future. By publishing our source code out in the open, users can feel confident that the Euki App will continue to be transparent, participatory, and secure.

What this means for Euki users:

  • This will not affect your data. Your data is still yours! Only the source code that makes the Euki app work will become public. Euki still does not collect any user health data you put in the app. You can read more in our FAQs, or read our whole Privacy Policy.

  • Higher transparency. As an open source Project, anyone will be able to see our code. This is a way to build trust and transparency with our users and the privacy community to show that our app actually does what we say it does - and doesn’t do what we say it doesn’t do!

  • Better security.  One of the ideals of the open source movement is that security issues can be identified and corrected sooner than for a “closed-source” project. Plus, as part of this transition, we are having a third party perform a security audit. Once completed, the results of this audit will be publicly available alongside our code.

Euki will be in good company! To highlight some private and secure examples of open source products that the Euki team uses and trusts: Signal’s messenger app, Bitwarden’s password management tools, Mozilla’s Firefox web browser, and Proton’s products like mail, VPN, and more. Beyond that, a lot of what we tend to think of as “~the internet~” is built on open source protocols and programming languages like: Android, Flutter, Java, Linux, and Python.

What about other tools are you usingthat store your sensitive data: Are they open source? Do they share third-party audits of their security and privacy standards publicly?

If the answer is no to both those questions - it might be time to consider switching to a product that does.

Sincerely,

Ana + Melinh
